Myofunctional therapy is like a fitness routine for your face! 💪 It’s all about strengthening the muscles of your mouth, face, and throat to help improve breathing, teeth alignment, facial growth, swallowing, and oral posture. The goal is to breathe easily, sleep better, and support healthy jaw and teeth development. 🌬😴🦷
If you notice mouth breathing, snoring, bed-wetting, trouble focusing, speech issues, or crowded teeth, myofunctional therapy could be just what you need! It’s perfect for improving symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, enlarged tonsils, or jaw development problems. 🛌📚

It’s simple! We create a personalized 5-7 month plan with exercises designed to strengthen the muscles in your face, mouth, and throat. 🏋️♂️ These exercises help you breathe through your nose, swallow correctly, and support the growth and alignment of your jaw and teeth. Plus, it helps you sleep better! 🌙
Step 1 is always an in-person evaluation. During this evaluation, we’ll assess your needs and create a custom treatment plan for you. You’ll answer some questions, take some photos, and have you demonstrate some specific movements to evaluate how you function. It’s easy, painless, and crucial to starting your therapy journey! 😊
It's complicated! The short answer is yes. Myofunctional therapy can help guide proper jaw development and reduce crowding by improving the way your muscles work. It is NOT in our scope of practice to move teeth or jaws- but it happens on its own when we are functioning correctly. It can also support orthodontic treatments by helping to keep teeth in the right place. 🦷🎯
First, you come see us in person at our Barrie, ON location for an evaluation. After that, you’ll do the exercises at home, with virtual video call check-ins every 2 weeks to keep you on track. We prefer this blended approach for everyone's comfort, time management, and of course our amazing feedback from families! 👍

Yes! While myofunctional therapy doesn’t shrink the tonsils directly, it helps address the root causes that contribute to enlarged tonsils. Many times, enlarged tonsils are linked to mouth breathing and poor oral posture. By retraining the muscles to promote nasal breathing and correct tongue posture, myofunctional therapy can reduce the strain on the tonsils and improve airflow. 🌬👃
How does mouth breathing affect tonsils? 😮💨
Mouth breathing means air bypasses your nose’s natural filter, which can expose your tonsils to more irritants and germs, causing them to swell. Myofunctional therapy helps you switch to nasal breathing (which is how we’re supposed to breathe!). This reduces the chronic irritation and inflammation that leads to enlarged tonsils. 🌿
Will myofunctional therapy prevent tonsil surgery? 🏥✂️
While myofunctional therapy won’t always replace the need for surgery, it can be a preventative tool or help post-surgery recovery. If you’re trying to avoid surgery or want to see if there’s a way to reduce symptoms naturally, it’s definitely worth exploring myofunctional therapy first. 🙌 For post-surgery, it’s great for teaching better breathing and swallowing patterns.
How does myofunctional therapy help children with enlarged tonsils?🧒👧
Children with enlarged tonsils often struggle with mouth breathing, sleep issues like snoring, and even bed-wetting. Myofunctional therapy trains your child to breathe through their nose and strengthen the muscles involved in keeping their airway open. This can reduce the effects of enlarged tonsils and help your child sleep better and feel more focused during the day! 😴📚
How long does it take to see results for enlarged tonsils with myofunctional therapy? ⏳
It depends on the individual, and certainly on the level of compliance, but many clients notice improvements in sleep quality and breathing patterns within a few weeks to a couple of months of starting therapy. Every case is different, but our goal is to support your body in healing and functioning optimally, naturally! 🌿💪
Should I try myofunctional therapy before considering a tonsillectomy? 🤔
If you or your child have been recommended a tonsillectomy but want to explore non-surgical options first, myofunctional therapy is a great place to start! It’s non-invasive and focuses on helping you breathe better and manage symptoms in a natural way. Always consult with your healthcare provider, but myofunctional therapy can be a key part of your plan. 🙏
Can my child do myofunctional therapy if they still need a tonsillectomy? 🧑⚕️
Absolutely! Whether surgery is on the horizon or not, myofunctional therapy is beneficial for training correct breathing patterns and ensuring recovery is smooth if surgery does happen. It’s all about supporting overall health and improving how the body functions, with or without surgery. 🩹🌸
